To understand the desire to change the Fijian flag, you must understand the history of Fiji. A brief look at its history makes clear just how far the island nation has come. The original inhabitants of Fiji called their home Viti. These were the Lapita people, who arrived BC, most likely from Vanuatu. Their descendants relied heavily on fish and lived in peace until around BC, when incursions from other parts of Melanesia caused intertribal feuding.Cannibalism became common, and in times of war, villagers moved from the coast to fortified sites. This remained the way of life for a very long time, and when Europeans discovered the island nation, they believed it was in a constant state of war.Intense social upheaval kept European settlement away until the early 19th century. It was Abel Tasman that first sailed past the islands now known as Fiji, describing the region as an area of treacherous reef systems, not for the faint hearted. This description kept mariners away for another years. James Cook was the next to pass through, though rather uneventfully, aside from a quick stop at Vatoa in the southern Lau Group.

The deal called for the establishment of five entities in the Levant:.The fourth entity comprised the Syrian Desert. Each power negociating its exclusive titles to the fractions passing through their zones of interest — Syria and Lebanon for France and Mesopotamia and Palestine for Britain. Both powers eventually understood that they had to negociate together to present a common front. To get what they wanted, Britain went so far as preventing the Empire from connecting the Hedjaz to Aqaba asking that the Sinai be part of Egypt and not Palestine in order not to risk the Suez Canal. By , Italy decided it wanted its own share and attacked the Empire in order to seize Libya. On the eve of WWI , and the Hussein-McMahon Correspondence, the Empire was de facto the scene of a game of economic partition and cultural and religious spheres of influence. The war and the Ottoman alliance with Germany would eventually provide France and Britain the opportunity to oust the other pretendents and politically formalise an ongoing situation and negociations that started a long time before. As such, the Sykes-Picot agreement introduced a third party on the diplomatic scene, although the Sharif had stipulated in his latest exchanges with McMahon that he was strongly opposed to giving up any part of the territory to France or any other power.Whereas the terms of Sharif Hussein seemed clear concerning the Arab territory, which he considered as a whole, the Sykes-Picot agreement envisaged the dividing up and the partition of that territory even if it was to lead eventually — as stated in the text — to the independence of the Arabs. The question about the incompatibility of the Hussein-McMahon correspondence and the Sykes-Picot agreement has been raised by numerous scholars and the debate it has provoked is far from over. Seen from the Arab perspective, these secret agreements were inconsistent with the McMahon-Hussein correspondence.British officials, however, maintained that there was no contradiction between the two agreements, at least in their public communications. Nevertheless, this inconsistency was raised and used among the British government soon after the signature of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, as attested by a note written by William Ormsby Gore in the Eastern Report dated May 31 st :.The agreement largely neglected to allow for the future growth of Arab nationalism, which at that same moment the British government and military were working to use to their advantage against the Turks. In the Sykes-Picot agreement, concluded on May 19, , France and Britain divided up the Arab territories of the former Ottoman Empire into spheres of influence. In its designated sphere, it was agreed, each country shall be allowed to establish such direct or indirect administration or control as they desire and as they may think fit to arrange with the Arab State or Confederation of Arab States.Under Sykes-Picot, the Syrian coast and much of modern-day Lebanon went to France; Britain would take direct control over central and southern Mesopotamia, around the Baghdad and Basra provinces. Palestine would have an international administration, as other Christian powers, namely Russia, held an interest in this region. The rest of the territory in question—a huge area including modern-day Syria, Mosul in northern Iraq, and Jordan—would have local Arab chiefs under French supervision in the north and British in the south. But if you see something that doesn't look right, click here to contact us!
