The movie DOES open up with a cigarette scene and a teen boy about gesturing towards his friend's mom's tushie. However, the movie also shows never to judge a book by its cover: ET is kind, wise and has healing powers despite his appearance and the scientist proves to be sympathetic and caring, not cold-hearted.
My advice is to sit down with your kids before and after movies to talk about what was good about it and what they'd wished had been left out of the movie. It's a great way to share views and teach children about what is appropriate and what is not. Fantastic flick This title contains: Positive Messages. Positive role models. Adult Written by JenPete November 7, TERRIBLE foul language makes this otherwise fantastic family film inappropriate We had great memories of this film and hoped to share it with our 8 and 10 year olds.
I'm sure glad we previewed it. The use of foul language is absolutely inappropriate for what would otherwise be a fantastic family film. There are, of course, tense moments, and some discussion should be had with young children about e. Spielberg did a great job building tension visually and with the help of John WIlliams' score.
We'll save this for when the kids are older. This title contains: Language. Helped me decide 4. Had useful details 3. Read my mind 3. Adult Written by smog April 9, Great movie, just not for anyone under at least 10 I love this movie, I really do. I was excited to show it to my son who's five and loves anything about aliens, monsters etc.
So we watched it. Thankfully he didn't catch it the first time around but he won't be watching this for quite a while. It's too bad too, it's a really cute movie aside from the language. Parent Written by kristakj October 18, For older than 7 My son is 7 and was still scared by ET so I think depending on your child you may want to wait a few years.
Helped me decide 2. Had useful details 2. Adult Written by DrHoritor January 27, The first immediate issue is the mother who very shockingly lets her children get away with all sorts of bad behavior.
She not only does not make any effort to stop or correct their behavior whatsoever, but she also seems to encourage it. And she is a terrible role model. My heart and stomach absolutely sank when Elliott called his brother P-breath. My parents almost threw away the movie when I was younger for this very reason. Am not happy at all to see this is in the juvenile section at the library.
There are still too many ways that the bad things are sneaking in. I like certain morals of Elliott and E. T and there are lessons to be learned about family. I will add however that some scenes might also be scary or too intense for younger children. They are not important to the overall story. Helped me decide 1. Read my mind 2. Parent of a 9-year-old Written by Jackandeoin January 30, ET the Extra Terrestrial is an exciting adventure story about the friendship between a young boy and an alien.
It is a classic science fiction movie, but some of its scenes might be too intense for younger viewers. Values in this movie that you could reinforce with your children include friendship, loyalty, courage and selflessness. This movie could also give you the chance to talk with your children about real-life questions such as the following:.

MESSAGE - Children and extraterrestrial beings tend to be kind-hearted and smart, while most adults are close-minded and obtuse -- and are not to be trusted, especially if they're government agents.
