What is the difference between patriarchy and matriarchy
Through this article let us examine the differences between patriarchy and matriarchy in detail. As explained in the introduction, a patriarchal system is a social system in which the father is the head of the household. This, however, is not confined to the household alone. It can be extended to the entire society where males dominate in all social, political, economical, legal and cultural roles. For instance, in most patriarchal societies women were very much confined to the domestic sphere, where they were completely cut off from the realities of the society.
One of the best examples for this can be taken from the Victorian era where women were considered as delicate, fragile, and ignorant beings. Jane Austen in her novels such as the Pride and Prejudice clearly depicts the social climate during a patriarchal reign.
From this, we can comprehend that the lives of women in a patriarchal society are that of complete dependence.
In the patriarchal society, even philosophers such as Aristotle believed that women were inferior to men in all aspects. This emphasized the idea that the inferiority of women was not limited to biological differences but went as further as intellectual differences. However, feminist theories on patriarchy highlight that this is merely another social system that has been created to oppress women.
A matriarchal system is a social system in which the mother is the head of the household. In a matriarchal society, the governance of the society is also in the hands of women. When examining the human history, there is very little evidence of matriarchal societies, because most confuse an egalitarian society or matrilineal society to a matriarchal society. The Mosuo culture in China can be considered as a matriarchal society.
In this society, females are the head of the household and women dominate the economic activities. Because of the fact that women have to take considerably higher time off than men for having children, and without the guarantee of paid maternity leave, women are often paid much less than men during these periods.
This is not due to discrimination however, as employers simply do not have the money, or do not wish to pay the money for work an employee that can not work. These often long periods of time and the physical toll it takes for women to go through having children tends to make it harder for them to return to the work force and entices many to choose motherhood.
Overall the amount of time women need for often unpaid maternity leave displays why the wage gap is not. The long hours effected working mothers who couldn 't be home to take care of their children and had to work instead. Women also faced exploitation in the workplace because it was easier for their employers to get away with paying them less. Ella Mae Wiggins was a famous poet that conveyed the struggles and hardships of female workers of the time though her powerful pieces.
She was a part of the fight for better working conditions. Another reason why women faced hardships in the workplace was because women had been on an almost equal level with men in the workplace until men came back from World War I.
When all the men left to fight in World War I, they left their jobs open. Taking charge and being aware of these problems in society will eventually led to changes. Will the end of inequality of the sexes ever be achieved? A woman who works full-time and year-round earn less money than men make because they are discriminated against in labor markets.
Even though this is just a myth, it does have a claim to it. By adding up the income of men and women and dividing each by the total population of each gender, one will find that men earn an average of twenty percent more than women do.
The truth behind the pay gap is how men and women make choices, choices about investing in their knowledge and skills that will lead to their education and overall job experience. However, the job experience of women is lessened by the reality of unequal pay. Women work hard just as men to earn that money so why not give it to them. Women are less likely to negotiate their first job offer than men. Even when women do negotiate they are likely to receive less than men. The world has an abundance of living things, and of course human beings fall into this category.
People are an intelligent species, and are all born with the same human structure in order to live and exist. While people are alike in many ways, each also has its own physical characteristics.
Not only are people born with different hair, eyes, and skin color, but also in different cultures, ethnicity, gender, and speaking a different language. Over the course of time migration from one region to another has occurred with the hope for advancement. Patriarchy in a system simply refers to males put in a higher position than females excluding them from being the head of the household and in many different governmental and leadership positions.
This way of life proceeds to spill over into other areas of life, which allow men to believe they have the authority in all positons over women. Misogyny refers to the hatred of women, and the patriarchal system can easily lead to men hating women for various reasons. When one is in a system where the male already has authority and power, it could be easy to begin to view females as worthless individuals.
Women are still not receiving equal compensation for labor they put in to get the same jobs done as men in America today. Do you think it is fair for a person to get paid less than someone else simply because of their gender? It is unjust and unfortunately it happens right here in our country. In the United States, women are oppressed every day by receiving a lower wage than men. This is known as the wage gap. They have been mistreated this way for a long enough time already.
Next he goes to argue about patriarchy, the idea of a male-identified society Third he argues that men are defined more by their manhood then adulthood Societies which are ruled by men is called patriarchal society and that society is called matriarchal where women are in charge.
