These traits never seem to change, although younger ferrets tend to be more persistent. Intact ferret kits develop behaviorally and physically differently.Late-altered kits tend to be larger and robust. Intact males develop testes and demonstrate sexual behavior, which includes dragging around another ferret by the scruff or mounting behavior. As a kit, they are practicing. Intact females come into breeding season at approximately 7 months of age and develop a swollen vulva and show extreme interest in male ferrets.Intact ferrets normally come into breeding season twice a year, and these behaviors can become extreme. After neutering, late-alter ferrets develop the same as a ferret that was an early-neuter, and the sexual behavior ceases. If an early-neuter kit demonstrates any or some of the sexual behavior of an intact ferret, a trip to the veterinarian is recommended. A healthy ferret kit will grow into a healthy adult. As the ferret ages 4 years and up , expect the ferret to remain alert, interactive and playful. But his energy and playfulness decreases with age. An aging ferret may play for 30 minutes, take a nap and then wake to play again. This is normal as long as the ferret is alert, playful and interactive for the period of time when he is up and about. Some ferrets at very advanced ages start to miss the litter box at times. Care needs to taken to make sure that senior ferrets are able to eat their normal diet; if not, a modified diet is required. Every ferret can and will age differently. With age, female ferrets tend to mellow out and the males become more laid-back. They become the cuddle bugs we love. Ferret kits usually shed their baby coats and grow their adult coat by 1 year of age. Ferrets normally go through two coat changes each year.During summer, they sport a short, smooth, silky coat; in the fall, they develop a longer, fuller coat. In the spring, they shed the thick, longer, winter coat. Ferret owners must give a hairball remedy during these times, because ferrets ingest shedding hair as they groom themselves.A hairball can cause a gastrointestinal obstruction that might require emergency surgery to correct. Coat change is sometimes dramatic. Although this is a normal progression, not all ferrets go through coat changes; it can vary with each ferret. Diet can play a major role in the condition of the coat and coat change. Supplements can help the conditioning of the coat. Color pattern also plays a role. Albinos will always be albinos. The roan or silver will lighten up and become white as a ferret ages. The darker color patterns — sables, black sables — show graying most predominantly on their hind legs. These changes are normal and should be expected. Dry skin or hardened pads may be helped by increasing the fat content in their diet and massaging a little oil onto the pads. Teeth and Eyes. As with any pet, as a ferret ages, dental problems become more common and they are more prone to tooth damage, decay and gum disease. By 6 years old ferret teeth may be distinctly yellowed all the way to the gum, and you may begin to see that some of the small teeth in their bottom jaw are missing.Older ferrets commonly develop cataracts in their eyes. You may notice cloudiness in your ferret's eyes and he is not able to see as well. You may experience some hearing loss, even to the point of deafness. Physical Mobility. If your ferret becomes less mobile as they age, you should consider making adjustments to help them cope. This could include:. Adding more litter boxes and selecting litter boxes with lower sides for easier access. Avoid drafts and provide extra bedding to keep them warm.Health Conditions. Unfortunately, many older ferrets develop health problems. Those most commonly diagnosed in ferrets, and the typical signs they cause include:.Heart and respiratory: Signs of may include coughing, loss of weight, decreased appetite, and lethargy. Adrenal gland disease : hair loss mainly around the lower back and tail , itching, dry brittle coat, skin conditions, increased drinking and urination, loss of appetite, weakened muscles, increased odour, lethargy. People always play with the youngsters first, exhausting both. Then they move on to the oldies, where everyone is happy to sit quietly with a little lap-warmer.The two groups are separate deliberately to avoid stressing the elderly animals. Young ferrets may play too rough and upset the old ones. However, another quiet ferret can give them the companionship many crave, as well as providing a warm sleep buddy. Even ferrets that actively dislike others are, I believe, better off with nearby company. It is very difficult on an elderly ferret to lose his or her home or be abandoned by their owner. When a ferret over 5 enters the shelter, they look so sad and confused. Worse, any underlying illness they might have often erupts out of their distress and a previously healthy animal become ill.Elderly ferrets become set in their ways. Cuddling is one of the greatest charms of the elderly ferret. The last thing they want is to be held. Little, elderly Bear will sleep on my lap for hours, wrapped in a flannel blanket, while I write, sort paperwork, or watch a movie. How many young ferrets will do THAT? Elderly ferrets can be a lot of extra work. Ann Salafia spends far more time with her older ferrets than with her younger ones. Carol Levy also feels you must pay far closer attention to any changes in their habits or physical health. You may find your own lifestyle restricted. An ill older animal may need their medicine on a careful schedule. One who is having difficulty eating hard food, or who has hypoglycemia or insulinoma, may need regular supplemental feedings. I can never leave home for more than eight hours without having a volunteer or sitter come in to feed ill ferrets — and there were times, with a particularly ill animal, when one had to be fed every 4 hours!Salafia adds that you must be more careful to find an experienced and careful sitter to care for elderly animals in your absence. Your vet should be carefully chosen, also. Your veterinarian should be knowledgeable about common diseases found in aging ferrets. When a ferret is 4 years or older, they should be seen by a veterinarian at least twice a year, to help catch any developing illness early. The monetary expense of caring for an elderly ferret can be hard. YOU must have the forethought to put a few dollars aside, or work out payment arrangements with a willing veterinarian. Most pet insurance plans do not cover ferrets. They grieve when one passes on…but within weeks sometimes days! They are brave and wonderful people — but they also know that older ferrets can be the very best of all.Elderly ferrets often make a number of adorable little sounds.

During pregnancy, your body begins to produce colostrum. Colostrum is a concentrated, highly nutritious fluid that your baby will drink during the first breastfeeding and for the first few days of life. Your baby will only get a small amount, but since it is very high in nutrition, it's all that he or she will need in the first few days. Colostrum is the perfect first food for your newborn because:.The first breastfeeding is a learning experience for you and your baby. Some newborns latch on immediately and breastfeed well from the beginning. Some babies show little interest in nursing and don't latch on at all. Other babies latch on but won't suck. All of these responses to the first feeding are normal. Be patient, keep trying, and ask for help. Many hospitals have lactation consultants on staff who are available to assist you. If possible, try to use the resources that the hospital provides while you're there so that you feel more comfortable when you go home.Get it free when you sign up for our newsletter. Bryant, Joy, Thistle, Jennifer. National Center for Biotechnology Information, U. National Library of Medicine. Anatomy, Colostrum. Update: June 13, Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Protocol Committee.June Lawrence, Ruth A. Riordan, J. Breastfeeding frequency and duration can vary a lot in the first week. Some babies have a long sleep — birth is tiring!By the time your milk comes in, around days two to four, your baby will probably be nursing eight to 12 times every 24 hours sometimes more! The good news is that this frequent feeding helps initiate and build your milk supply.Just concentrate on breastfeeding when your baby gives you hunger cues, 8 such as:. Crying is a late sign of hunger, so if in doubt offer your baby your breast. Preventing damage is better than having to treat it, so see a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist if pain continues after the first few days. It turned out a tongue-tie was the culprit, and we received amazing support from our city breastfeeding clinic to diagnose and rectify this. This is because the oxytocin released by breastfeeding will help your womb contract further, as it starts to return to its usual size. Some women find their breasts get very swollen, hard and tender — a condition called engorgement. Read What is breast engorgement? What goes in must come out! Colostrum acts like a laxative that encourages your baby do his first poo, called meconium. An average newborn has one wee for each day of his life… until about day three, when he should have about three wet nappies daily, and from day five, five or more wet nappies daily. You should also notice these nappies getting heavier over the first few days. However, if his vomit has orange, red, green, brown or black in it, or he is projectile vomiting, see a healthcare professional. The same applies if your baby has a high temperature, blood in his poo, a sunken fontanelle the soft spot on his head , or is not back to his birth weight by two weeks of age.Never put ice or an ice pack directly on your skin. Your baby will get better at breastfeeding as the first month progresses. Expect to feed your baby about 8 to 12 times in 24 hours.Let your baby tell you when he or she is finished eating. When the baby self-detaches from the nipple, you can offer the other breast. Some babies feed better between breasts if you change their diapers and burp them. Often a baby will breastfeed for a shorter period at the second breast. Sometimes he or she may not want to feed on the second breast at all. Simply offer the second breast first at the next feeding.Gain weight. Babies typically gain two-thirds of an ounce to 1 ounce each day, up to 3 months old. Every baby is different. Some will eat quickly and some will take longer to enjoy each drop. Others will take frequent breaks during each feeding. It's important to let your baby lead each feeding. This self-detachment will increase the amount of higher fat and higher calorie milk hindmilk that your baby will get. But once the breast is mostly empty, some babies will keep wanting to suck as a way of self-soothing. Over time you will be able to tell when your baby is switching to this self-soothing sucking. If breastfeeding is well established, you can offer a pacifier instead. If you aren't sure if your baby is full, try offering the other breast. Your baby likely will go through a few 2-today growth spurt periods.During this time, he or she will seem to want to eat almost around the clock. Babies often have a growth spurt between 2 to 3 weeks, 4 to 6 weeks, and again at about 3 months. Within a few days, your baby will go back to a more typical pattern. Let your baby set the pace for breastfeeding.Watch his or her feeding cues. Here are some examples of feeding cues:. Keep in mind that you will express only small amounts of colostrum at first, but this immune-boosting substance is extremely beneficial for your baby. Some mothers find that expressing the colostrum by hand massage into a small cup or spoon is easier than using an electric pump in the first few days.Hand expression into a cup also allows you to save each drop, instead of losing milk that is trapped within the tubing of the pump. Once your milk supply increases, the amount of milk you can express will probably fluctuate from day to day. As a result, you will need to increase the number of times per day you express milk to maintain an optimal milk supply. These fluctuations are normal—just more easily observed when expressing milk than when breastfeeding. Once your baby begins breastfeeding, your milk production is likely to increase. To maximize your milk production, try to get as much rest as possible, take your prescribed pain medication, drink adequate fluids, and minimize stress. Your breast milk can be fed to your baby through a tube that passes through her nose or mouth into her stomach or from a tiny cup or bottle. The feeding route will depend on the degree of prematurity of your infant and on the policies in the NICU at your hospital. Occasionally young infants fed by bottle may start to prefer the bottle, which delivers milk faster and with less effort than feeding at the breast. Some of these babies later refuse to breastfeed—a situation called nipple confusion or nipple preference. During this period when your baby is using an alternative feeding method, you can introduce her to breastfeeding by holding her skin to skin against your chest whenever possible and allowing her to nuzzle and suckle at your breast. This, of course, should be done only when the neonatologist or pediatrician has given approval. Soon you may be able to progress to a nursing supplementer or other device that will deliver your expressed breast milk from a bottle or syringe through a tiny tube that is taped next to your nipple. With this method, your baby should begin to feed partly from the tube and partly from your breast as he latches on to your breast and actively nurses. Early breastfeeding sessions will probably be more successful if you time them for when your baby is most awake and alert but calm.Experiment with different nursing positions to discover which works best for the two of you. A premature baby often tires rather easily, so these early feedings are likely to be brief. You can use your remaining time together to hold, rock, sing to, and cuddle your newborn. Try to breastfeed as often as possible and continue to express milk for feedings in your absence. Frequent nursing and milk expression, as well as regular skin-to-skin holding, will help maintain your milk supply.
